Spill The Tea: Peppermint

Updated: Jul 17

How do you take your tea?

As someone who has been fortunate enough to partake in quite a few afternoon teas, and just tea in general, I am always thankful for my moms vanilla sugar that she makes. When I make my tea at home, peppermint tea being one of my favourites, I add a splash of milk, and of course, the best sugar in the world (in my opinion, but I'm biased), vanilla sugar. Wanting to share this yummy goodness, I asked my mom for her recipe. So here you have it, vanilla sugar, oh, and the benefits of peppermint tea. Spill the tea, don't spill the sugar, and remember, don't cry over spilt milk, just enjoy your tea.

Mom's Vanilla Sugar:

Ingredients: 1:1 ratio

  • 1 cup organic cane sugar

  • 1 whole vanilla bean

Instructions:

  1. Split the vanilla bean lengthwise with a sharp knife to expose the tiny seeds inside.

  2. Scrape out the seeds using the back of the knife.

  3. Add the seeds to the cane sugar in an airtight jar or container.

  4. Bury the empty bean pod in the sugar as well — it will continue to infuse flavor.

  5. Seal the jar tightly and store it in a cool, dry place.

  6. Let it sit for 1 month, shaking or stirring once a week to distribute the flavor.

In my family we make about six cups of vanilla sugar (6 vanilla beans), and it lives in our pantry like the rest of the sugar.
